A Weekend on the Coast of Maine

Every summer, I try to take a weekend to experience the beautiful coast of Maine. Last July, while scouting a place to camp in Maine, I stumbled across an Instagram video that portrayed a cute and quaint little town called Ogunquit. Taking a break from my doomscrolling, I rushed to scour the internet for information regarding this town and realized that I had found the perfect place to refine my burgeoning photography skills. Little did I know, I would pick one of the busiest weekends of the year to practice my photography!

Lodging

Due to the fact that I did not look for lodging until three weeks before, everything was sold out or just a bit out of budget for me. But as the outdoorsy person that I am, I found a campsite two miles from Ogunquit with great amenities, so I booked it immediately. Camping for me ended up being the best option; the campsite had running water facilities and a pool, so it was a good oasis after a day out on the town. I was very excited for this trip. I bought all the food I wanted - cheese, crackers, candy, and of course, other "healthy" food to be an adult. I packed all that needed to be chilled in a cooler and proceeded to leave it at my apartment. But that is okay because I was a mile from a grocery store and could restock on food there!

The Experience

This Maine trip was an exciting opportunity for me because it was my first true solo trip! I was definitely nervous about it at first, but I would soon realize that I really enjoy a solo weekend trip.

I arrived at the campground Friday night. I proceeded to set up camp, ate dinner, and then went to bed. It had been a while since I had tent camped at a campground. Usually, I am in the backcountry, and I forget how well you can hear car doors slamming and people talking, so now earplugs are essential to the car camping kit!

Saturday morning, I woke up around 6 and headed out to Ogunquit to start my day! I was hoping to get out on the town before it became crazy busy with people to take some photos. It was a very beautiful day, sunny, 80 degrees, and not a cloud in sight! The first thing I did was walk around the coast trail called the Marginal Way, which is a paved path that weaves around the coast. The trail was scattered with cute coastal homes, inns, and little beach nooks. I was able to get some great shots on this trail! Following my walk on the Marginal Way, I got coffee and a little something to eat. I then walked around downtown Ogunquit. I did some shopping and explored the little shops, grabbing novelty souvenirs along the way. After shopping, I went to the beach, but unfortunately, it was high tide, so there was minimal beach space. As I was very hot from being out in the sun, I pivoted to plan B, which was to instead relax at the campsite pool! I then finished off my night with a delicious dinner, read some of my book, and turned in for an early night.

Sunday was much the same plan-wise. I woke up around 5 am, packed up my camp, and headed back to Ogunquit to take some more photos. Today it was a little more overcast as there was a storm forecasted in the afternoon, and the cloud cover made for some dramatic shots! After walking around, I grabbed coffee and breakfast. After I ate, I headed to see a lighthouse and then the cute fisherman's Marina in Ogunquit. This was such a lovely spot, and I was able to take some pictures that I am very proud of! After this, the storm was starting to head in, so I took this as my cue to head home!

All in all, it was an amazing weekend. I was able to capture photos that I am quite keen on, and I will do this again this year!  I will probably venture to a different small coastal town this time around; however, I haven’t quite narrowed it down! I also know now that I will need to get a lobster roll to experience coastal Maine fully. I have uploaded some Ogunquit photos to my portfolio, and I hope you guys enjoy them as much as I enjoyed taking them!
